Ruthin School

Mold Road, Ruthin, Denbighshire, LL15 1EE

Ruthin School is a small, independent, coeducational boarding and day school catering for pupils from the age of 10 upwards. It is situated on the outskirts of Ruthin, a small market town in the Vale of Clwyd, Denbighshire. The School’s location is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, providing pupils and staff with a beautiful, safe and peaceful environment to live, work and study.

The School, one of the oldest in the United Kingdom, was formed in 1284 as part of a castle and garrison built by Edward I. It was re-founded in 1574 by a former pupil, Gabriel Goodman, Dean of Westminster and granted a Royal Charter by Elizabeth I as a centre of academic excellence in North Wales.

Ruthin School is highly academic, with the majority of parents choosing Ruthin due its outstanding academic A Level results. Most pupils achieve entry to the UK’s top universities. Recent years have seen around 15% of the Upper Sixth gain entry to Oxbridge, and over 90% gain entry to a university ranked in the top 20. Ruthin School is currently ranked 6thwithin the league table for top coeducational boarding schools (by A Level results.)

With around two-thirds of the pupil population coming from over 25 different overseas countries, the School is diverse. Class sizes are small with typically 10 pupils in a class throughout the School. These small classes exist throughout the whole School, not just within the Sixth Form.

The curriculum offered is broad, with pupils following a path to achieve GCSE (or IGCSE), AS Level and A Level qualifications. Despite many schools in the UK no longer requiring their pupils to sit AS Levels, at Ruthin School all pupils take AS Levels at the end of the Lower Sixth. These results are declared to universities (and, typically, with most of the grades being “A” – these results are helpful in achieving the outstanding list of university offers each year.)

Pastoral care and support for the wellbeing of all pupils is given a strong focus. The School takes full responsibility for all aspects of its pupils’ lives. At Ruthin School, boarding pupils are not required to find external guardians as the School provides care, accommodation, activities and staffing throughout holiday periods. The School, through the Principal and staff, carries out the full function of the role of guardian.

Assessment and rigorous testing take place (for all pupils in Form 3 and above) each Saturday morning, meaning that all lessons are devoted to teaching and learning. The results of tests are shared within the school community and sent to parents, each week, within a few days of the tests being sat. Staff use the results of the tests to provide additional support or extension work to ensure that every pupil has a strong understanding of the material covered in lessons.

A range of activities, sports and musical activities take place throughout the week and at weekends, with no academic lessons timetabled on a Wednesday afternoon.

Ruthin School is a happy school, with all pupils appreciating both the strong friendships they make with classmates from around the world and the care and attention they receive whilst at School. Parents appreciate the excellent feedback provided to them on an almost daily basis (should they want it!) and also feel a strong part of the Ruthin School community.

With a stunning environment to learn and rigorous focus on academic success, Ruthin School pupils thrive.
