Christ's Hospital

Independent School of the Year 2024/25

Christ’s Hospital opened in 1552 and is one of the oldest boarding schools in the UK. The school is well known for its outstanding education principle and its diverse breadth of students.

The school is set in a beautiful and inspiring 1,200-acre site in West Sussex in the southeast of England and is fortunate in having its own mainline railway station with regular trains to London, Gatwick airport and Brighton.

The school is extremely well resourced. While every fibre of the school is steeped in history, teaching takes place in 90 well-equipped classrooms, with exceptional facilities including a dedicated music school, inspirational art school, professional theatre, extensive sports fields alongside world-class sporting provision, a pioneering science department, technologically enabled classrooms and the centuries old Royal Mathematical School.

Christ’s Hospital prides itself on delivering a vibrant curriculum that has both challenge and opportunity at its heart. The curriculum is made up of three interwoven parts: a stimulating academic curriculum which covers everything inside the classroom; an extensive broader curriculum which encapsulates everything outside the classroom; and a pastoral curriculum which has deep roots in the boarding house system complemented by a dynamic learning for life programme.

The vibrant broader curriculum encourages life skills and offers an enormous range of sport, music, art, drama and expeditionary education as well as activities, clubs and societies, including expeditionary education, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Young Enterprise, chess, debating, public speaking and so many more.

Christ’s Hospital takes enormous pride in providing exceptional pastoral care, ensuring that students feel safe, well cared for and supported throughout their educational journey. The close-knit boarding houses are a fundamental aspect of day-to-day life and play a crucial role in providing a supportive and nurturing environment.

Over 98% of leavers go on to top universities in the UK and abroad.

Through first-class education and exceptional pastoral support, Christ’s Hospital provides each student with stability and the opportunity to thrive and fulfil their potential. Leavers take with them the confidence and resilience they will need to achieve success at university and beyond.
