Brummana High School (BHS) has provided a first class education since 1873. The school was founded by the British Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The beautiful, sprawling, 16-acre campus in Mount Lebanon, with modern facilities mixed seamlessly with historic buildings, offers the whole-school community with an environment to flourish. Boarding facilities, including Edinburgh House opened by Prince Phillip in 1967, provide students with a comfortable and inspiring space, secure in the unique family atmosphere amongst the boarding community. Graduates of BHS go on to some of the premier universities in the UK, US and other locations around the world, as well as top universities in Lebanon. The passion of service, the school’s motto is ‘I Serve’, remains within each Old Scholar throughout their lives, as does their fondness and connection to Brummana High School.
BHS is a coeducational day and boarding school following a British and international education system. Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE and A Level) as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme are made available to students in Secondary school. The school seeks excellence academically, and in the arts and sports, and aims to promote integrity in its students. Each member of the school community ensures that students from diverse backgrounds are prepared to be responsible citizens and life-long learners, respecting each other and helping the community. Languages are an important part of life at BHS and focus is given to ensuring all students leave with a strong ability in Arabic, English and French, the three languages commonly used in Lebanon.
The Quaker ideals the school was founded upon nearly 150 years ago remain very evident to the present day. Individuality, service, tolerance, respect, peaceful resolution and environmental stewardship are embraced by students and, indeed, the whole-school community. The school’s Meeting House is used on Sundays by the small Quaker community in Brummana and surrounding areas.
The stunning campus which BHS offers is breath-taking. Positioned 750 metres above sea level and above the Lebanese capital of Beirut and the Mediterranean Sea, panoramic views abound. Declared officially as a botanical garden, the BHS campus is nature-rich set including pine trees dating back hundreds of years. The new Sports Arena, a top of the range facility for local and international tournaments, and a new robotics lab are two recent additions to campus. Other sports facilities include a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, an indoors sports facility and new multi-gym. The arts and crafts centre as well as several large assembly halls provide spaces for learning and performances, and the outdoor amphitheatre hosts the annual Art and Music exhibition.
