At the heart of Bryanston’s approach is our distinctive method of education, the Bryanston Method, the keystone of the School’s philosophy since foundation in 1928, tailored to the needs and interests of each pupil.

Alongside high academic standards and expectations, we provide an emotionally and intellectually supportive environment, allowing pupils to develop independent, creative, and unbounded thinking.

We encourage innovation and creativity in all areas of the curriculum, believing that imagination and boldness are as applicable in history, science, or maths as in music or art. Sport is compulsory for all pupils and the school offers an exciting range of co-curricular activities.

Pastoral care and academic progress integrate through our one-to-one tutorial system. Our tutors meet one-to-one with their individually assigned tutorial pupils once a week, with an emphasis placed on individualised care and support, so that every pupil, regardless of their ability, is able to discuss their studies and extracurricular commitments. This close connection is truly what sets Bryanston apart.

Each week a pupil is given an effort mark and a comment on their work for every subject, recorded in an echart visible to the child, the tutor and the parents. The marks are discussed in tutorial and a strategy for the following week is planned and the pupil then has one week to experiment with suggestions to see if they can improve their grade. It encourages motivation and develops self-worth in the pupil. The tutor also helps to guide the pupils in their exams subjects, university and degree course and support them through their university application.

Bryanston has an international reputation in the creative and performing arts: Music, Film, Drama, Dance, Fine Art & DT. It is equally strong in Maths and Science and boasts double Nobel-prize winning Frederick Sanger among their alumni. The school also has one of the broadest co-curricular programmes of any independent school and pupils are encouraged to explore the full range of their talents. It is through the combination of academic and co-curricular activities that pupils learn the resilience to overcome difficulties and enjoy a sense of success in many areas.

Pupil quotes:

  • ‘Bryanston is a really fun place to be. There is so much to do, with so many new activities to experience that you don’t really have enough time to ever feel alone, the time literally flies. You develop great new skills and try new things, things you never thought you could do and it gives me a chance to get out and get some fresh air. The more you get involved in the better.’ George D pupil

  • One of the things that I like about Bryanston is having your own tutor. I think it is really helpful, because you can talk to them about anything you want to, whether it’s to do with work, your house or everything in general. You can have a private chat, and tell them if you have any worries or problems and they will help sort them out. But if you don’t have any worries, then you can just have a fun chat about anything you want to! Lulu C pupil

Old Bryanstonians frequently tell us the skills of planning, prioritising and organisation they learned at Bryanston meant they made a confident and positive start at university, helped them gain a good degree and are still useful in their careers. Often the co-curricular activities they enjoyed at school informed their career path and gave them the conviction and assurance to pursue their interest and passion.
