The Duke of York’s Royal Military School (DOYRMS) has a very simple but ambitious vision of providing an all-round education with an academic focus. From the moment you enter the parkland estate, you will be amazed at the facilities on offer and the breadth of opportunities students can access.
As the country’s only state full-boarding school, DOYRMS is open to all 11–18-year-olds and offers an affordable option for parents looking for a full-boarding environment. The school is based on an independent-style model with Saturday morning lessons and co-curricular activities throughout the week and Saturday afternoons.
However, parents are only required to pay for boarding as the government pays for the education. This leaves only £5,166 per term (£15,498 per year, correct at time of writing) payable; the inclusive fee covers full-boarding, catering, laundry and over 80 clubs and activities per week.
When students join the school, they become ‘Dukies’ for life; at the beginning of their Dukie journey, students are welcomed to the school with a comprehensive induction programme. This programme, delivered to new Year 7 through to Year 10 and Year 12 students, begins before the rest of the school return from their summer holidays. This allows staff to dedicate their time and focus to the new cohort.
The school welcomes students in all year groups and throughout the academic terms due to the school’s admission process being open 365-days of the year. Enjoying a full-boarding environment, means all students benefit from the full Dukie experience and everything the school has to offer.
Set within 150 acres of Kent countryside near Dover with unrivalled facilities, students enjoy a unique blend of academic achievement and an active lifestyle with sport, music, drama, and a vast activities programme including Combined Cadet Force and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme (Bronze, Silver and Gold are offered as the school is an accredited Award Centre).
Students benefit from superb facilities and fantastic teachers, which combine to encourage students to achieve academically. Official progress figures for GCSE place DOYRMS in the top 2% of schools nationally. In recognition of the exceptional academic standards, the school has achieved the SSAT Educational Outcomes Award 2020.
A £24.9 million refurbishment project in 2014 delivered a new sports centre, high-quality accommodation, teaching blocks and performing arts centre. All classrooms are large, bright and well resourced, each boasting a large teaching screen and all students are issued with their personal laptop. Sports facilities include an Olympic standard floodlit athletics track, a floodlit all-weather hockey pitch, state-of-the-art strength and conditioning gym suite, dance studio with harlequin floor, a six-lane indoor heated swimming pool and two climbing walls.
The school is fortunate to have a well-resourced medical centre on-site and students profit from a hugely experienced pastoral team of Houseparents, academic tutors, and matrons. Wi-Fi throughout the school and regular exeat weekends (although the school remains open for students to stay if they wish) mean students can keep in touch with their parents.
Offering 80% academic scholarships into Sixth Form to students that gain at least 8 GCSE passes including English and Mathematics, with grade 8 or above in at least three GCSEs and grade 7 or above in a further three GCSEs, makes the school even more affordable. Sport Scholarships are also awarded to female students in Hockey and male students in Rugby who demonstrate excellence and dedication to their sport.
