Ben McCarey - Frensham Heights School

Ben McCarey

Head, Frensham Heights School

Ben McCarey joined Frensham Heights as its new Head in September 2024 following 7 years as Head at Holyport College. Ben is a family man and has brought his wife, Becky, his two children and his springer spaniel Dolly to join him in his Frensham adventure.

Ben comes from a long line of teachers and is himself an English teacher. He believes in a progressive and innovative approach to education that focuses on developing the whole child, not just on academic results. In his view a traditional, linear education system does not adequately prepare children for a rapidly changing and uncertain world. He believes an education should equip children with the ability to think creatively, critically, and empathetically.

His philosophy is built on the idea that education should be a fun, engaging, and innovative experience that allows children to be themselves. He champions creativity, individuality, and a "no-uniform, first-name" approach to foster mutual respect between students and adults. He encourages teachers to be brave and innovative in their methods, and for students to be risk-takers.

Ben has already made quite an impact, not only on infrastructure but on the students and their enjoyment of school. Improvements in the Junior School include a new curriculum, new performance space and “Book Hive” library; Year 12 and 13 students are getting a new library and café area to complement the existing Sixth Form Centre; the woodland high ropes course has had an upgrade with a new zipwire added and Frensham have welcomed four goats and thirteen rare breed chickens to their new farm.

He also emphasizes the importance of community, kindness, compassion, and optimism. He believes in the "goodness of humanity" and stresses that the education system too often seeks to put children into boxes. As Frensham celebrates their Centenary year, Ben wants to grow Frensham Heights' reputation at the forefront of progressive education and has plans for the coming year to open a Centre for Innovation and Research at the school.
