The IB Career-related Programme (CP): A Flexible Alternative to A Levels

Not every student wants to follow a purely academic route after the age of 16.

Some young people already have a clear interest in areas such as business, engineering, sport, creative industries, hospitality or technology and want their studies to feel more connected to future careers. This is where the IB Career-related Programme, or CP comes in.

The Career Programme was created by the International Baccalaureate to provide a more flexible pathway for students aged 16 to 19. Rather than studying six academic subjects as they would in the Diploma Programme, CP
students take at least two academic IB Diploma subjects alongside a career-related qualification offered by their school. This might include business studies, digital technologies, sports coaching, engineering or a range of other vocational programmes. Often the CP is taken in conjunction
with one or two BTEC’s. (Click here for more information about BTEC’s)

Students also complete a CP Core which develops skills in communication, personal and professional development, intercultural understanding and reflective learning.

Academic Challenge with Practical, Career-Focused Learning

The result is a curriculum that combines academic challenge with practical, career-focused learning. One of the biggest misconceptions about the
Career-related Programme is that it is somehow easier than the Diploma Programme.

In reality, it is simply designed for a different type of learner. The CP appeals to students who enjoy practical application, workplace relevance and a more
specialised focus while still benefiting from the academic rigour and international outlook associated with the IB.

Universities increasingly recognise the value of the programme, particularly when it aligns closely with a student's intended degree pathway. Many graduates progress to university, higher apprenticeships and professional training programmes.

For families comparing options, the CP often sits somewhere between the traditional academic focus of A Levels and the vocational strengths of qualifications such as BTECs or T Levels.

The Career-related Programme deserves far more attention than it often receives. For students with clear interests, practical strengths and career ambitions, it can offer the best of both worlds: academic credibility and real-world relevance.
