The IB Diploma Programme (DP): Is It Right for Your Child?

For families approaching the final years of school, one of the biggest decisions is choosing a post-16 pathway.

In many schools this means deciding between A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, often referred to simply as the IB Diploma.

The IB Diploma is a two-year programme for students aged 16 to 19 and is widely regarded as one of the most academically challenging school qualifications in the world.

Unlike A Levels, where students typically specialise in three subjects, IB students continue studying six subjects across a broad range of disciplines.

This means they maintain strengths in languages, humanities, sciences and mathematics while still developing areas of particular interest.

IB Diploma Curriculum

Students choose three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Higher Level subjects are studied in considerable depth and are broadly comparable to A Levels in academic rigour.

However, the Diploma Programme is about more than subject choices.
Every student must also complete three core components. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) encourages students to think critically about how knowledge is created and understood. The Extended Essay is a substantial independent research project of up to 4,000 words. Creativity,

Activity and Service (CAS) encourages students to engage in activities beyond the classroom, from volunteering and sport to creative projects.

These elements help students develop the research, writing, organisational and independent learning skills that universities value highly.

The Diploma Programme is particularly attractive to universities because it combines breadth and depth. Admissions tutors know that students have successfully balanced multiple academic disciplines while completing significant independent work.

That said, the IB is not for everyone. Students need to enjoy a broad curriculum and be comfortable managing a demanding workload. Those who have a strong preference for specialising in just a few subjects may find A Levels a better fit.

For students who enjoy intellectual challenge, however, the IB Diploma can be an exceptional preparation for university and beyond.
