Set in 125 acres of wood and parkland, Reddam House Berkshire is driven by a philosophy of equality and aspiration. As a co-educational, independent school, Reddam House Berkshire is world-renowned for its academic, cultural and sporting excellence.
Housed in a magnificent Victorian mansion and surrounded by stunning woods and parkland, few schools have the luxury of the physical space and facilities that Reddam House students benefit from.
Reddam House currently looks after 600 students from three months to 18 years old, 81 of whom are boarding students. Through the four schools – Early Learning, Junior, Middle and Senior – they are active participants in setting the direction of their educational journey and developing a love of learning.
A BRITISH CURRICULUM WITH EXTRAS
The broad range of subjects creates a curriculum that accentuates independent inquiry. Students study up to 11 GCSEs with a free choice outside of the core subjects of Maths, English and Science. Students also have the option of working towards LAMDA qualifications. Students are encouraged to take on the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), highly regarded by universities as demonstrating students’ preparedness for undergraduate study.
By offering a holistic education from Early Years through to Sixth Form, students experience a continuous transfer through year groups. Central to the teaching philosophy is the CHEX programme (Challenge and Extension for all), which sits within both formal academic and practical pursuits. It manifests in lessons with extension exercises, challenging questions and higher-order thinking.
The impressive Performing Arts curriculum is further enhanced by the unique Inspired by Berklee partnership that provides an innovative curriculum and an artists-in-residence program that sets new standards in creative and artistic education. Featuring in school workshops, delivered by Berklee’s award-winning faculty the programme develops contemporary music, dance, theatre, and creative capacity skills.
The Boarding House offers a range of flexible boarding options, including full boarding, 7 days a week during term time, weekly boarding, from Sunday to Friday evening and extended days, regular stays, and ad hoc stays.
The Boarding Schools Association (BSA) recently awarded the Boarding Innovation Award to Reddam House for the seamless transition to virtual learning in 2020, praising the speed and creativity at keeping the boarding community connected through technology and innovation.
Students who board at Reddam House can expect to be part of an inclusive, respectful and international community where independence and self-confidence are developed and celebrated. Boarding is available to students aged 8-18, and the flexible boarding options aim to suit almost every family circumstance.
Every student at Reddam House is valued, and each individual’s needs carefully considered. Small class sizes mean students have a high degree of personal attention and an abundance of one-to-one time with dedicated teachers. The strong academic and co-curricular programme is complemented with the three ‘Rs’ of pastoral care – relationships, respect, and responsibility.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Academics is just one area where students thrive; the extracurricular programme allows students to enjoy a wide variety of activities, including theatre, dance, drama and music, screen printing, photography and computing. Regular sports fixtures take place in rugby, hockey, football, cricket, netball, rounders, swimming, tennis, basketball, golf, cross country and judo.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH
There is always great excitement when students reach Year 9, which is when they have the opportunity to begin their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. The expectation is students will progress through to Gold by the time they leave school, and it is a cause for celebration visiting the Palace to receive their Gold Award.
COMBINED CADET FORCE
Reddam House is proud to have a strong forces link through their Army section of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). The CCF is very popular and helps to develop Year 9 and 10 students by introducing them to a plethora of activities and skills which assist in the steps toward adult life. Students can take on various qualifications, with activities including leadership training, first aid and map reading to expedition training and survival skills.
EXAM RESULTS AND MOVING ON
Despite being a challenging year, 2020 saw students achieve the best GCSE and A level results in their history, leaving them very well prepared for their next steps. The vast majority of students go on to higher education, with recent destinations including Cambridge, UCL and Manchester. Over 60% of boarding students receive offers from Russell Group universities – a testament to their continuous hard work and ability.
