Hazlegrove is an exceptional coeducational full boarding and day school for children between 2-13. Hazlegrove enables children to be children and is committed to celebrating childhood, a vibrant and creative curriculum, exceptional pastoral care and stunning rural Somerset location combine to make children feel nurtured, motivated, inspired and encouraged to love learning for life. The school is linked by a Foundation with King’s School Bruton which provides education to 18.

Every child is unique, the breadth and depth of the learning experience at Hazlegrove ensures that all of our pupils have the opportunity to discover their strengths and interests. The children are grounded in their approach to the world, inclusive in the warmth that they show to others and happy in the knowledge that they are growing up in an environment which supports a broad range of interests. When a pupil moves on from the school, as a Hazlegrovian in the 21st century, they are a child that is empathetic, kind and connected to the world; one who is independent but knows that developing relationships and a sense of duty to the community are integral to a successful life.

The curriculum has a real, hands-on feel where children participate and are not just spectators. We are passionate about developing in the children, genuine awe, wonder and curiosity at the complexities of life and the world about us - past, present and future.

The breadth and balance in the curriculum give pupils an opportunity to get excited about the lessons they have each day. Activity and investigation enable pupils to learn to think for themselves and to solve problems.

The heart of prep school education is expressed in one word, preparatory. The curriculum at Hazlegrove prepares children for the next phases of their lives, for the demands of a more specialised senior education and, in the longer term, to be able to meet the challenges of the workplace and to thrive in their personal and professional lives, understanding their responsibilities in making the world a better place.

The traditional academic disciplines, including Latin, are complimented by Music and Drama, Art and Design and Outdoor Education, as well as a varied Sports programme. Computers and ICT are seen as a vital component of Hazlegrove education but never as an end in themselves.

Sport is an integral part of the school day at Hazlegrove for all pupils from the Nursery to Year 8.  The grounds and indoor sports complex provide excellent facilities and all pupils are encouraged to join in and enjoy learning a wide variety of sports.  There is an emphasis on the development of physical fitness and co-ordination as well as skills and control.

Pupils play team games but also have the opportunity to pursue individual sports to a high standard.  Major sports for the boys are rugby, hockey and cricket whilst the girls play hockey, netball and cricket/rounders. Athletics, swimming and racket sports are also well represented.

At Hazlegrove our boarders are the heartbeat of the school and our thriving community of boarders is testament to our success. Boarding is available in several options – full, weekly or flexi.

You can be confident that our experienced houseparents and boarding staff will take care of your child’s physical and emotional wellbeing, ensuring they have a relaxed and fun time at our school.

It’s not an easy decision to make, but with many of our boarding families choosing Hazlegrove on the strength of personal recommendations from past and current pupils, we know we offer a very positive boarding experience both for boarders and their parents. It’s a wonderful opportunity for your child to reach their potential, grow in confidence and make friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

Pastoral care is key to the strength and overall success of the boarding at Hazlegrove; it is at the heart of everything that we do. Our pastoral care in the boarding houses at Hazlegrove School is underpinned by the philosophy that each and every child should be parented – every day! In other words, children should not go through a day without an adult showing an interest in them and expressing a genuine concern for them. They all deserve to have an adult involved in guiding them and being a positive role model to them. We achieve this by having a large number of adults on duty in and around the Houses every day.

Communication is key and our “family-feel” encourages dialogue between all the adults involved with the care of the children. We would like parents to feel that they are a part of the boarding journey and that we work together to enrich the lives of the children in our care.

We all believe in promoting childhood and making sure that the children have a magical time whilst at Hazlegrove. The combination of King’s Bruton and Hazlegrove Prep School as a Foundation provides a busy, happy, and thriving community and we would be delighted to welcome you for a visit.
