Andrew Hobbs
Downside School
United Kingdom
Andrew Hobbs became the Head of Downside in September 2018, after ten years as Deputy Head. He was educated at Worth School and studied Classics at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he also gained a rugby blue. He has taught in boarding schools since 1989, beginning his career at Hurstpierpoint College and then moving to Canford School, where he spent sixteen years. He was Head of Classics there and subsequently became a Housemaster.
It is his conviction that education happens most successfully when schools engage in a partnership with families built on trust and shared values. He believes that children thrive in an environment where they feel valued and accepted as they are and where they feel encouraged to contribute to their community in accordance with their unique and distinct gifts.
Andrew and his wife Damaris, who works in the NHS as a physiotherapist, have four children, all of whom attended Downside. In their spare time they enjoy wild swimming.
