Adam Whitehead

Headteacher, Steyning Grammar School
I read Marine Biology at Newcastle University, before spending a couple of years travelling through Australasia during which time I worked on the great Barrier Reef. I completed my PGCE at Sussex University in 1994 and my first teaching job was at Oathall Community College in Haywards Heath the following year. I left West Sussex to become Head of Science at Lewes Priory in 2000 before joining St Paul’s as an Assistant Head when they moved into their new site and buildings in Burgess Hill in 2004.  During my time there I was responsible for a range of roles including the KS3 and 4 pastoral system, curriculum and timetable and the sixth form.  I left to join the Weald Community School and Sixth Form as Teaching and Learning Deputy in 2008.  After 7 years there during which time the school moved to an outstanding Ofsted judgement I moved to the Bohunt Education Trust in 2015 in order to take up the very rare opportunity of becoming a Headteacher responsible for building, opening and growing a brand new school. After 7 years in this role at Bohunt Worthing I was honoured to be successful in my application for the headship of SGS taking up the post in April 2022.
