Situated on the edge of the beautiful Ashdown Forest in Sussex, yet within easy reach of London, the coast and both Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, Ashdown House is a magical place where children enjoy an education that is exciting, challenging and which offers a wonderful breadth of opportunity. Opportunities to take risks, to be a child, to question, secure in the knowledge that they will be heard, but also challenged, to help them to develop a fully rounded character.
There is a tremendous sense of community spirit in every aspect of school life at Ashdown. Children are encouraged to express themselves with confidence. Whether it is climbing trees, playing chess, building dens, looking after the chickens, being creative in the Art or DT Rooms, composing a hit pop song or digging a personal vegetable plot, as many opportunities abound outside the classroom as inside. Children have the time and space to make the most of their varied days and this plays a vital part in encouraging them to be independent and thoughtful of others. Yes, technology plays a part, but we are a school that values interaction with real people, handling of books and resources, dirt under the fingernails and the power of soap and a nail bxrush!
Ashdown House is a small school where the family atmosphere is palpable and family values underpin all we do. We see this as an essential ingredient in the happiness and development of your child. Our ethos is based on sound Christian morals, with kindness and decency at its heart. Of course, we welcome and encourage children from all denominations and none. All enjoy the magnificent and extensive grounds, participating in both major sports and minor sports and competing successfully against local prep schools and in National tournaments. Our Art, DT, Music and Drama Departments are equally thriving with plays and concerts for all, often with a great degree of interconnectedness, emphasizing the links across the curriculum. Nearly every child in the school learns at least one instrument. The opportunities for children to be creative are as boundless as their own interests, enthusiasm and passion.
Full boarding, Flexi and Day are all extremely popular. The boarding community has a very full programme of activities when their day peers are not at school – so much so that the majority of day pupils plead to board!
Our scholarship record speaks volumes for the quality of teaching and all pupils are expertly prepared for entry into the leading public schools of their choice.
