Christ College Brecon
Situated within the Brecon Beacons National Park, Christ College is an independent co-educational boarding and day school, founded in 1541. Today, the college welcomes over 380 pupils between the ages of seven and 18.
In 2018, Christ College Brecon pupils excelled in the new linear GCSEs, achieving outstanding results with an overall 94% pass rate. Despite the introduction of harder, linear A Levels, Christ College Brecon pupils also scored excellent A Level results, with one in five grades being A*.
This success is testament to the quality of the teaching and learning experiences the school offers; however, it also highlights the strong relationships between the Head, staff, pupils and parents. These outstanding results follow an ‘excellent’ Estyn inspection of Christ College, in which the school achieved the highest score possible in all five areas of judgement: standards; wellbeing and attitude to learning; teaching and learning experiences; care, support and guidance; and leadership and management.
The school’s dedication to developing its pupils into respectable and valuable members of society is shown in the school’s broadened curriculum. In 2018 Christ College Brecon introduced a Curriculum for Life to its Sixth Form, which focuses on four aspects of life: Financial Literacy; Politics, Philosophy and Society; Wellbeing, as well as The Next Step of Life.
Christ College Brecon is a school where pupils will not only enjoy learning, but also everything that makes up a school; including its sports, extra-curriculars and the community. As pupils move through the school, they have opportunities to choose from an ever-widening range of activities according to their talents and preferences. This ranges from cooking or language classes to IT clubs and tie-dying for junior pupils in St Nicholas House, and sports, ceramics, Mandarin or music for senior pupils.
With dedicated professional coaches in rugby, hockey, tennis and cricket, the school is delighted to have several U18 Welsh hockey squad members among its cohort and is a venue for Welsh Hockey’s 360 Academy. Rugby continues to thrive, as Christ College Brecon joins forces with Cardiff Blues and several pupils have been selected for the Blues and Dragons regional academies.
Head of Christ College, Gareth Pearson, said: “The sense of community in this school ensures that every pupil can call Christ College their second home. We continuously try to meet the needs of individual pupils, which shows our dedication to helping pupils develop into well-rounded, humble and impressive young adults. Our strong close-knit community is characterised by mutual respect and warmth, creating a welcoming atmosphere where extraordinary friendships grow, and pupils excel academically.”
In September 2018, the school’s first overseas sister school opened in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. A strong link exists between the two schools to enhance pupils’ school life in all aspects, including cultural exchanges and shared learning experiences.
