Children born in July and August will find themselves learning in the classroom alongside children who can be 11 or even 12 months older than them. But how much of a difference does this make? And what support do independent schools have in place to ensure summer born children reach their full potential?

Stephen Hammond

Stephen Hammond, MP 

After graduating from London University with a degree in Economics, Stephen had a career in financial services and investment/corporate finance.

In 2005 Stephen was elected Member of Parliament for Wimbledon and nine months later joined the Opposition Front Bench contributing to the development of Conservative Transport policy. In 2010 Stephen was re-elected with an increased majority and was promoted to be Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. In 2012 he became Transport Minister with responsibility for Roads and then Rail. At the same time Stephen was Minister for Shipping – promoting the industry in the UK, organising the first ever London Shipping Week in 2013, introducing a new system of cross department high level Ministerial groups. In 2014 Stephen joined the Public Accounts Committee and after re-election in both 2015 and 2017 Stephen has been a member of the influential and respected Treasury Select Committee.

Stephen has authored several articles on the Insurance Industry and is Chairman of the APPG on Wholesale Financial Services. He has been championing the case of summer-born children since 2015 following a number of constituency cases on the matter, and has held a couple of Adjournment debates and meetings with Ministers.

Sarah Segrave

Mrs Sarah Segrave, Headmistress of Eaton House The Manor Prep School

Sarah Segrave joined Eaton House The Manor in 1993, and has been Headmistress of three schools including Eaton House The Manor Girls' School and Eaton House The Manor Pre-Preparatory School. Sarah wants Eaton House The Manor to combine rigorous academics with a warm and happy atmosphere where all boys flourish. She feels that her greatest asset is her experienced staff who nurture and bring out the best in young boys. She firmly believes that all children need the right opportunities, facilities and encouragement to achieve their full potential and this guides her approach. She has created a school where every boy is known and championed and has his moment to shine.

Annabel Heseltine

Annabel Heseltine is a journalist and TV and radio broadcaster who has worked in the media for over thirty years. For the past nine years she has edited education magazines and has been editor of School House Magazine, the leading education magazine on independent schools since 2012. As a mother of four children, including twins born in late August, she has a personal as well as a professional interest in the subject of summer born babies.
