The Royal School Wolverhampton is a non-selective, non-denominational Free School and State Boarding School.
We welcome boys and girls aged 4-19 from all ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds.Boarding starts at 11 years of age. As a State Boarding School our fees are very attractive to families. As a Free School we are state-funded but manage our own affairs independently from central and local government. The Royal therefore continues to provide a dynamic mix of academic learning and extra curricular enrichment but with the added advantage of no day fees.
We are one of only a handful of free schools in the UK offering such an all-through education and our pupils gain hugely from the long-term stability this provides, developing lifelong friendships and receiving on-going support and inspiration from staff who get to know them well and can make informed decisions about their progress and future.
The Royal primarily serves the local Wolverhampton area, as well as Shropshire, Staffordshire and the greater West Midlands. We also maintain our long-established boarding culture and have 80 boarding places taken up by students from from far and wide and our vibrant international spirit that was identified as an ‘outstanding’ aspect of school life in our latest report.
Whilst the Free School was only established in 2016, many of our core values continue to reflect those of the 1850s when local philanthropist and businessman John Lees, who founded an orphanage which later became an independent school on this site. As well as compassion and caring for others, it was his intention to help and support the most vulnerable in society and that ethos remains as strong today.
We currently have 1515 pupils in School made up of 630 Primary, 594 Secondary and 280 in Sixth Form. Future growth will be carefully managed to balance local demand with our continued commitment to keep class sizes smaller than most other state-funded schools in the region.
