King’s Bruton is a remarkable school with over 500 years of history.  Along with the Foundation’s Prep School, Hazlegrove, we are blessed with a wonderful location in South Somerset and the key to our success, and increasing popularity, is to combine our relatively small size with a high-quality education.

In recent years we have had outstanding GCSE, A Level and BTEC results with most of our pupils going on to their first choice of university. Our hockey teams have reached twelve National Finals with our U16 girls winning the English Schools' National Indoor Hockey Championships. There are over 70 pupils in our full Choir, our Chapel Choir sing Evensong in regional cathedrals every term, whilst our 200-seat theatre is the venue for outstanding drama. Our thriving CCF is one of the oldest in the country, whilst over half of our senior pupils undertake Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Life at King’s is full of variety and opportunities. Pupils enjoy a broad and challenging academic curriculum.  The GCSE curriculum is designed to provide breadth and balance for pupils and to provide them with the necessary skills and intellectual development to progress into the Sixth Form and beyond. Built around a core of Mathematics, English, Science and the Languages, it offers opportunities for pupils to select subjects that are of particular interest. In the Sixth Form, pupils are able to select from an extensive range of subjects that will not only serve to challenge them, but to help provide and promote curiosity, enthusiasm and motivation. Academic rigour and a co-ordinated programme of support has meant that 98% of pupils at King’s are accepted into their first choice university and this includes Oxbridge, International, Medical and Russell Group Universities. Pupils at King’s are offered a challenging and stimulating curriculum that has been designed to stretch their capabilities and maximise their personal development.

Pupils are taught by subject specialist teachers and benefit from their knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm. Our teachers, not only inform and instil knowledge, but also look to enrich and encourage curiosity and intrigue, preparing pupils for a world full of opportunity through a rich and diverse curriculum.

At King’s we are committed to providing excellent teaching.  Small class sizes and enrichment opportunities are there for pupils, in an environment that helps nurture and promote intellectual and emotional development. Teaching at King’s is innovative and allows for every pupil’s specific needs to be met. Through the promotion of active learning and differentiated approaches to teaching and learning, pupils at King’s make excellent progress and leave thoroughly prepared for life beyond the classroom.

Outside of the classroom, pupils are enriched and benefit from the King’s Academic Workshop programme, debating, visiting speakers and subject trips that serve to generate curiosity and to enhance the learning experience.

There is a myriad of sports to take part in and a plethora of chances to shine musically or dramatically. King’s is proud of its Christian ethos and the Chaplaincy provides countless moments during the week when pupils can, if they wish, explore matters of faith. Our extracurricular activities programme remains wide-ranging and ever-changing, whilst there are scores of chances for pupils to spread their wings during CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. At the heart of the King’s Bruton community lie our six boarding houses, each with their own unique identity and fantastic system of pastoral care and support for pupils.

The strong pastoral side of the School helps to support pupils with their academic progress and the outstanding support and guidance offered to pupils from the teachers, tutors and Housemasters helps ensure that every pupil, regardless of ability, is provided with opportunities and provision to enable them to achieve their academic potential. A frequent and comprehensive programme of assessment is built into this programme of support and ensures pupils are aware of their academic progress, targets and mechanisms for progress.

At King’s, pupils are encouraged to respect themselves and others, to adopt a positive attitude, and to strive to be the best they can be. Pupils leave here confident but not arrogant and fully prepared to contribute to life beyond the school gates. A King’s education is one that provides academic rigour while also allowing opportunities for enrichment, leadership and creativity within a vibrant and supportive community.

King’s is a busy, happy and thriving community and we would be delighted to welcome you for a visit.
