A Blue School is a school that integrates ocean literacy, sustainability, and marine science into its curriculum, culture, and community.

IOC-UNESCO coordinates the Global Network of Blue Schools, and we are proud to lead the Namibian Blue School Network as part of this international effort.

Blue Vision

The Lüderitz Blue School was established to be a leader in Blue Education, to inspire innovation, wild curiosity and to create the next generation of ocean stewards. We are proud of our ‘blue vision’ and passionately embed ocean education and literacy into our academics, extracurricular program and school ethos. Our learners have a deep appreciation and respect for the ocean, experiencing all aspects of it through their extracurricular activities, our tailor made Marine and Maritime Studies Curriculum and much more.

Marine and Maritime Studies

The curriculum for this stand-alone academic subject has been developed by Head of Blue Education Marnie Erasmus. 

It is designed to be delivered to students in years 3 to 8. Students will explore the mysteries and marvels of the ocean following different themes: Ocean Culture, Ocean Geography, Ocean Arts, Living Ocean, Ocean History and Future Oceans. These units recur every two years allowing students to build on and deepen their knowledge and understanding as they progress through the school.

Students are encouraged to share what they have learnt in end of year shows, productions and exhibitions.

The Blue Schools Network

Lüderitz Blue School is the leading school of the Namibian Blue Schools Network, which is a branch of the Global Blue Schools Network.

Blue Schools and Networks are being established all over the world as institutions which engage their learners and communities with marine-related topics to promote awareness, environmental stewardship, and a sense of responsibility to protect our ocean.

Challenge 10 of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) relates to changing humanity’s relationship with the ocean, to “ensure that the multiple values and services of the ocean for human wellbeing, culture, and sustainable development are widely understood, and identify and overcome barriers to behaviour change required for a step change in humanity’s relationship with the ocean.”

Blue Schools play a major role in delivering Ocean Education in both formal and informal education settings within their communities. It is also believed by many that Blue Schools are the most realistic intervention to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.
