What's out there and how to find it. This session explains who is eligible to apply for a scholarship or a bursary and how schools are widening the net further.
John Claughton was educated at King Edward’s School, Birmingham and Merton College, Oxford and, after failing as a professional cricketer and a merchant banker, he taught Classics and cricket at Bradfield College briefly and at Eton College for 17 years.
After four years as Head of Solihull School, he returned in 2006 to his old school as Chief Master. During his tenure the school raised £18m from alumni, £10m for Assisted Places and £8m for capital projects, and, in 2010 became a 100% IB Diploma School. In 2015 the school was named Sunday Times IB School of the Year and won the TES award for independent/state school partnerships.
In September 2015, John was chosen by Tatler as ‘Public School Head of Year, in August 2016 he was commended for his fund-raising achievement by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE Europe) and in November 2016 he was awarded the TES Independent Schools Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also translated (bits of) Aristophanes and Herodotus for Cambridge University Press. He retired in August 2016.
