With rising school fees, scholarships and bursaries provide a lifeline for many parents. But with each school having it's own requirements the choices can be confusing. Susan Hamlyn, Director of The Good Schools Guide Education Consultants, and Ben Nicholls, Director of Social Responsibility & PSHE at Charterhouse, will unravel the options.
Rising school fees at the most well-know schools have created huge questions. This talk will address the affordability question head on, looking at practical solutions for parents who want to educate their children in the independent system.
Susan is the Director of The Good Schools Guide Education Consultants (GSGEC). The GSGAS has 32 expert and experienced advisors and is a unique consultancy service for parents on all matters to do with education and parenting. Susan was editor of The Good Schools Guide for many years, has visited over 200 schools and has advised and guided many hundreds of parents. She is an English teacher, formerly head of dept in a London girls' independent school. She has written six 11+ books for parents to use with their children.
Ben Nicholls is Director of Social Responsibility & PSHE at Charterhouse, focussed on increasing the School’s contribution to wider society, and on enthusing and preparing pupils to play a positive role in it. He also teaches music and is a sixth-form tutor. Ben began his career on the civil service graduate scheme, where amongst other posts he was Aide to Lord Laming during his 2009 child protection review, and was then an adviser to the House of Commons Education Committee.
In 2013 he joined the senior management team at Newham College as Head of Policy & Communications. He has held a number of voluntary roles, including as a Parliamentary candidate in 2015, as founder-chair of youth charity RicNic, and as a primary school governor.
He has written on education and politics for the Guardian, TES, Huffington Post, FE Week and other outlets, and last year authored a report on community education for the think tank CentreForum.
